A Letter from Dr. Jochsberger
My Dear Students:
In my 42 years at the College I have had some very good moments: promotions, tenure, teaching awards, etc. But nothing in my academic life and few things in my personal life can compare to last Monday’s event.
The gifts were, of course, extravagant – I haven’t read a non-pharmacy book since before the computer was invented and now I can read all sorts of things electronically.
The poster was magnificent – it appears that all 600 of you signed it. And I will return p.r.n. or even when not necessary.
But the thing that moved me the most was the outpouring of affection and the complimentary words I received from all of you. With all due modesty, I consider myself to be a highly competent instructor. But I always believed that a professor’s obligation was not to just teach students, but to guide them and nurture them. My first committee assignment, which I requested, was on a committee called the Student-Faculty Relations Committee. Since then I have considered myself an advocate for students, both in academic and non-academic matters.
Many people finish a career without knowing if they’ve done anything worthwhile. Monday’s “surprise” validated my career and, if I had any doubts that I was successful, they completely vanished.
I am immensely grateful to all of you for what you did and for permitting me to teach you. I am also grateful to the tens of thousands of students who came before you and allowed me to touch their lives.
I wish you all the greatest of success, lives full of happiness, love, good health and, most of all, peace.
Sincerely,
Ted Jochsberger
